Sheet steel foor three frigatesDecember 2011 – Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) from Vlissingen recently handed over the Tarik ben Ziyad to the Royal Moroccan Navy. This ship is built with sheet steel in Grade D and DH36 and bulb flats in DH36 supplied by De Boer Staal. The ship, which was named after an important Moroccan general, is the first in a series of three frigates. For the construction of these vessels, De Boer Staal is supplying sheet steel in Grades D and DH36 and Holland Profile in DH36. The frigates were designed using the DSNS modular Sigma approach, which provides the client with a high level of flexibility at reduced cost. The Tarik ben Ziyad is 105 metres long and 13 metres wide, and it can accommodate a crew of 110. She is slightly longer than the other two frigates, so there is enough room for a VIP crew and command facilities. Maritime dutiesAll three ships have advanced communications and weapons systems, and bomb-resilient structures on board. They retain stability even when damaged. The vessels are primarily used for coastguard and maritime security duties in Moroccan territorial waters but they are also available for humanitarian operations. |
